What house painting costs in Auckland
Published Auckland figures put an exterior repaint of a three-bedroom, single-storey house at about $5,000 to $15,500, and a whole-house interior at about $4,200 to $15,000. These are ranges that painting businesses and industry sources publish, not quotes. Your price depends on prep, access, surfaces and coats.
Exterior repaint costs
The outside costs more than the inside because of prep and access. Weatherboards in sound condition are the cheapest exterior to repaint per square metre; weatherboards in poor condition, with flaking paint and bare timber, can cost twice as much because of the scraping, sanding and priming. Plaster and brick sit in between.
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| Three-bedroom, single-storey (about 150 m²) | $5,000 to $15,500 (most $8,000 to $14,000) |
| Two-storey house or villa | $7,000 to $30,000+ |
| Weatherboards in sound condition | $22 to $70 per m² |
| Plaster, brick or roughcast | $25 to $100 per m² |
| Heavy prep or a full strip | $80 to $120+ per m² |
| Extra prep and repairs | $1,000 to $3,000 on top |
Interior painting costs
Inside work is priced by room or by wall area. Published Auckland figures sit between $700 and $2,000 for a bedroom with walls and ceiling, and $4,200 to $15,000 for a whole three-bedroom home. Ceilings, high stairwells, wallpaper removal and big colour changes add time.
| Job | Published range |
|---|---|
| One room (walls and ceiling) | $700 to $2,000 |
| Whole three-bedroom home | $4,200 to $15,000 |
| Walls, per m² of wall | $20 to $80 |
| Ceilings, per m² | $13 to $22 |
What moves the price
Prep is the biggest variable. After that come access, the number of coats, the surfaces and the paint itself. A quote with detail on each of these is easier to trust than a single number.
- Condition. Chalky but sound paint needs a wash and light sand. Flaking paint, bare timber and rot need scraping, filling, priming and sometimes board repairs.
- Height and access. A two-storey repaint may need scaffolding, which published figures put at $800 to $5,000 depending on the house.
- Lead-based paint. Wet methods, containment and clean-up add time. Published add-ons run about $1,000 to $3,000; a full strip of lead paint costs far more.
- Coats and colour change. Going from dark to light, or the reverse, can need an extra coat.
- Detail. Villa fretwork, finials and multi-pane windows take longer than plain boards.
- Paint quality. Premium paint costs more per litre but is a small share of the total next to labour.
How to estimate the cost of painting your exterior
Measure the walls, multiply by a published rate for your cladding, then add the extras. Length times height for each wall, less big windows and doors, gives the area. Multiply by the per square metre range for weatherboard, plaster or brick from the table above, and add prep, any scaffolding and lead-safe work.
- Wall area. Length times height of each wall, gables included, less large glazing.
- Base rate. Area times the published per m² range for your cladding and its condition.
- Prep and repairs. Add $1,000 to $3,000 where boards, sills or flaking paint need work.
- Access. A two-storey repaint may need scaffolding, published at $800 to $5,000.
- Lead-safe work. Add about $1,000 to $3,000 for a house from the 1980s or earlier.
The result is a rough band, not a price. It shows whether a quote sits in the normal spread, and which line to ask about if it does not.
Rough exterior cost guide
The same sums as above, done for you. It uses only the published ranges in the tables on this page and gives a range, never a single price. Nothing you type leaves this page.
Scaffolding is counted for two storeys. Most houses need at least some prep, which is why the whole-house figures in the table above sit higher than a sound-paint result here. The range is only as good as the published figures behind it; a written quote after a site visit is the only real price.
Hourly and day rates
Most house painting is priced as a fixed sum, but the labour underneath it is real. Published Auckland charge-out rates run from about $40 to $86 an hour. Resene’s 2026/2027 trade guide works a sustainable painter’s rate out to about $74 an hour before GST, which is a fair yardstick for a quote that looks too cheap.
A very low quote usually means fewer hours of prep, fewer coats or cheaper paint. Ask which.
How to compare painting quotes
Put the quotes side by side and check that each one names the same surfaces, the same prep, the primer, the number of finish coats and the paint range. Then compare prices. Under the Consumer Guarantees Act a painter must work with reasonable care and skill whatever the price, but a quote that skips prep is pricing a shorter-lived job.
- Does it say how flaking paint and bare timber will be handled?
- Is lead-based paint mentioned for a house from the 1980s or earlier?
- How many finish coats, and on which surfaces?
- Who covers drains and cleans up paint chips?
- Is the price fixed, and does it include GST?
Asked before a repaint
- How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house in Auckland?
- For a three-bedroom, single-storey house of about 150 m², published Auckland ranges run from $5,000 to $15,500, with most sources between $8,000 and $14,000. Two-storey homes and villas run from about $7,000 to $30,000 or more, because of scaffolding, detail and prep.
- How much do painters charge per hour in Auckland?
- Published charge-out rates for Auckland painters run from about $40 to $86 an hour, depending on whether GST is included and the painter’s overheads. Resene’s 2026/2027 trade guide builds a sustainable rate to about $74 an hour before GST. Day rates of $450 to $600 are also published.
- Why are painting quotes so different?
- Mostly because of prep and the paint system. One quote may include washing, scraping, filling, spot-priming and two finish coats; another may allow a single coat over a quick wash. Lead-safe methods, access, and the number of colours change the hours too. Compare the line items, not only the total.
- Is it cheaper to paint in winter?
- Some painters have more free dates in winter, and that can help on price or timing for interiors. Exterior work in winter is slower because surfaces must be dry and paint needs dry, mild weather to cure, so short days and rain can stretch the job.
- How much should I pay a painter per day?
- Published Auckland day rates run from about $450 to $600. Most house painting is quoted as a fixed price for the whole job rather than by the day, so ask for the total, what it includes and whether GST is added. A day rate suits small jobs and touch-ups.
- Is it cheaper to paint a house yourself?
- You save the labour, which is most of a painting bill, but not the paint, the gear or your time. Prep is where home jobs usually fall short, and older houses need lead-safe methods. Interiors and ground-level work suit doing it yourself best; work at height is where hiring pays for itself.
