House painting in Ponsonby

Ponsonby is one of Auckland’s oldest suburbs: small timber cottages and villas, packed close together on narrow, hilly streets near the city. Nearly all are weatherboard, nearly all carry well over a century of paint, and access between houses is often tight. Weatherboard and villa painting covers the general method.

A Victorian walking suburb

Council’s special character statement describes Ponsonby as an early example of a Victorian walking suburb, close enough to the city for workers to walk to work, with subdivision either side of Ponsonby Road from the 1860s. Early houses were small and closely spaced on narrow, hilly streets.

Council’s special character survey names cottages from the 1860s to 1880s and villas from the 1880s to 1910s as the commonest styles in Ponsonby North, with 1920s and 30s bungalows along Provost Street. In Ponsonby Central, angled boundaries on O’Neill and Summer Streets set houses at an angle to the street.

Weatherboard, timber detail and the ridge

Timber is the main material across this overlay: weatherboard walls, timber detailing, double-hung sash windows and verandahs with decorative balustrades, posts and friezes, under mostly corrugated iron roofs. That detail is where repaint hours go, because every edge of fretwork needs scraping, priming and two coats.

Ponsonby Road runs along a ridge with views to the harbour and the Waitākere Ranges, and some substantial houses from the 1890s were built along it for those views. Ridge-top walls catch more wind and sun than the sheltered gullies, so their north and west faces usually need attention first. The exterior repaint process is the same; the prep list is longer.
